Exodus 24 - They saw GOD!

Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. Yet He did not stretch out His hand against the nobles ofthe sons of Israel; and they saw God, and they ate and drank. (Exodus 24:9-11)

It's absolutely astonishing that they saw God and had a meal with Him! They actually saw His feet! I guess I always skipped over this passage because I never thought that this actually happened. Wow.

A testimony

More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, ... (Philippians 3:8a)

In this verse Paul tells his view of life and its things. He says that gaining the things of life, posessions, successes, people, is actually a loss when compared with something of much greater value. What is this treasure? Knowing Jesus Christ. And I want to testify with Paul that all things are loss indeed, in light of knowing Jesus Christ.

As a family, we attended church and so I was exposed to the Bible and the Gospel from a very early age. However, my heart did not have a natural affection toward God; just the opposite, I didn't really care about Him, had no affection toward Him and, in reality, hated Him. It showed in my childhood and teenage outbursts of anger toward my parents and my sister. It showed in my love for the world and its lusts as well.

Then God brought me to His word, the Bible. It was at a winter Christian youth retreat in my junior year of high school. I only went with the church because my high school friends were going; and I only started reading the Bible because I wanted to be better than all the other kids. I started reading in the book of Hebrews, I still remember because at one point it started to snow and the pages of my Bible are still ruffled in that section.

I came home a different person. I didn't fight with my parents, or sister, I didn't need to. I didn't love my sin anymore, I would rather read the Bible and be close to God. He had changed my heart that February and I wouldn't be the same person again. Because of His work, I finally understood what it meant that,

"God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

It meant that I was condemned because of my wicked rebellion against God and that my just punishment would be an eternity of suffering. It meant that God, in His love, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place. That I am saved not through anything that I do, but through believing that Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, died and rose again on my behalf.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-7)

Confident hope

I was challenged by a brother today, to believe God's word. Not to just know it and to acknowledge it intellectually, but to believe it with confidence. Instead of, "I believe God..." to have an attitude of, "I believe God!". To believe that God will grow the relationship with the woman I love, to grant us patience, humility and true love.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. (Hebrews 11:1-2)

You follow Me!

So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!" (John 21:21-22)

Why do I worry about others' success? Other's opinions of me? My main goal and concern should be to follow Christ and to obey and please Him. I need that narrow mindedness and singular focus, no matter where I am. At work, at church or with friends or family, to follow Christ and to love my Savior.

Sichuan earthquake

From the BBC today:

There are still stories of survivors being pulled from the rubble.
A week on from the earthquake, an elderly woman was rescued in Beichuan county suffering from an infection and many broken bones, state media said, while another was extracted from a collapsed residential building in Deyang city.
But other stories illustrated how hopes for those still trapped are fading fast.
Video pictures emerged of a man wedged under fallen masonry. He was still alive, and was lent a phone to speak to his wife.
Rescuers later managed to extract him, but not in time to save his life.

The christian's confession

Ambassadors for Christ

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)

Psalm 13:5

Where is your trust? If things go wrong, what will you rely on? Will it be your ability, your friends, your finances? When everything crumbles, what do you expect to remain?

But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness;

Let your trust be in God's love; in His gracious, unmerited favor. Let your trust be in His patience and His kindness manifested in the sacrifice of His only beloved Son for you and me. And not only your trust, but let it also be your joy.

The Gospel in Psalm 5

The first two lines tell us of God's perfect holiness, by which we can understand His hatred toward sin, which is expressed in the middle four lines of the passage. The second to last line uncovers the author's salvation in that he is accepted by God by God's own "abundant lovingkindess", and not by any work of the author's. Finally, we see the appropriate response to God's saving love, which is worship.

For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;
No evil dwells with You.
The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;
You hate all who do iniquity.
You destroy those who speak falsehood;
The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.
But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
At your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You.
(Psalm 5:4-7)

Now, we have to make the Scripture personal and ask ourselves the following questions: Do I realize that I am boastful before God? That I am the one who does iniquity and speaks falsehood? And that I am a man of bloodshed and deceit?
If we're honest with ourselves, every one of us will acknowledge that we stand condemned in these things before a God who takes no pleasure in wickedness and in whom no evil dwells. What then?
Your only hope is to enter by His abundant lovingkindness.
But what exactly is His love? Namely that God freely forgives sin through faith in His Son, apart from doing good deeds.

For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God... (1 Peter 3:18a)

And this, ultimately is why God deserves all praise.

A recompense for good deeds

Our confidence

There is so much power in prayer because God promises to give us any request that we ask for which is according to His will.

This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. (1 John 5:14-15)

This should also motivate us to find out what His will is!

Proverbs 28:13

And what are the other gods? Not gods at all, but the invention of man. God's word pronounces them as nothing, and warns us that we will become like our gods if we trust in them.

God is Faithful

Jesse's Kingdom Will Not Come

My kingdom is dead and dying and it will not come. My kingdom is only darkness, sin and idolatry. I envision it as a life of comfort, pleasure and success. It would be a life wasted. Instead of trying to build a castle and a kingdom for myself, which means trying to fashion my life according to my pleasure, God calls me to live solely for His kingdom and to put all my time and effort into it. I cannot produce anything good, but by His grace He will still be glorified in this life.

Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed by Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.

Fully Funded by Jesus Christ

Here's the context. Over the past six months I have struggled to convince a professor at Stanford to fund me, which means that I would do research for them in exchange for having tuition paid in full and earning a stipend to live on as well. My heart has stumbled continually over this issue and it has become an idol that I have worshipped and desired above God many times.
I was meditating over 1 John 2:20, "But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know." and studying the attributes and role of the Holy Spirit, which John refers to as the anointing. That's when God made me realized that I am fully supported and fully funded by Him!
This agrees with what the Bible says about the blessing that God has given us in His salvation. This is especially clear in Ephesians 1:3-14. Check this out!
Paul start by saying that He has indeed blessed us with every spiritual blessing,

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

Election. God made His choice to save me before Genesis 1:1

just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him,

God predestined me to become His son.

In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

He has forgiven me of all my sins through the sacrifice of His own Son.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.

God has revealed His will to me, even what He will do in the end.

In all wisdom and insight He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.

He has given me an everlasting inheritance that does not fade away.

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory.

God has sealed me with the Holy Spirit.

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given a a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.

Lastly, but most importantly, the purpose and reason for all this blessing is the praise of His glory!

The World is Not Big Enough

It has been a struggle trying to find a professor to fund me at Stanford. I feel like I have been trying and trying and God has been closing every door. I Will Not be Disappointed

Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters gave a seminar on the doctrine of Justification this Saturday. It was amazing. To know that my sin was given to Christ and that His righteousness and perfect life was given to me. God punished Him by crucifying Him on the cross while God has forgiven me and pronounced me righteousness by clothing me in Jesus' righteousness. Amazing! Thank you Lord.
Furthermore, knowing the depth of my sin and my inability to please God in any form by my actions makes it crystal clear that I am only saved by the work of Jesus Christ, not any work of my own. All I contribute is sin. What a great God and what great compassion!
Dr. Waters also preached this Sunday on Romans 5:1-5 which was very encouraging. He explained the peace that we have with God because He has justified us and how we should now exult in hope of the glory of God.

Therefore, having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2)

And then he spoke on trials. How we should rejoice in trials. Wow.

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3-5)

I admit that this passage is way, way over my head. But I do know that in the midst of my trials, God is producing perseverance and proven character in me. That these will result in a hope that does not disappoint.

God's Will for My Life

I found God's will for my life. Okay, so find isn't totally accurate, I was shown what God's will is. I admit that it's not comprehensive, but it is quite direct if I may say so myself. Enough suspense, here it is.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to posess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. So he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you. (1 Thessalonians 4:7-11)

The Problem in the Universe

Make Me a Missionary

What would it be like to be a missionary right where I am? Right here, right now instead of dreaming of going off to a far away land to proclaim the good news of Jesus. I find myself too afraid and incapable of anything good. Maybe that's the right attitude though, after all.

Soli Deo Gloria

He owns everything. It is all His. The Universe is God's and all that is in it. This computer belongs to Him for He created every atom with which it is composed. He owns every living thing and that includes me. He created me. I was created by God. "For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13). My arms were created by God. My fingers. My mouth. Eyes, mind, feet, skin, lungs. All are His. All are His and all are for His glory. The palm, birch, willow, cedar, fir and oak were all spoken into existence by God and created for His glory. "O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!" (Psalm 8:1)

He owns much more. His is the attention and eternal fixation of every beast, tree and man. All look to Him for their very survival and life.

"They all wait for You
To give them their food in due season,
You give to them, they gather it up;
You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.
You hide Your face, they are dismayedl
You take away their spirit, they expire
And return to dust.
You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the ground." (Psalm 103:27-30)

Also, His will be the kingship. Although He is already king, there are still many who do not recognize Him as king. "'For from the rising of the sun even to its setting, My name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name will be great among the nations,' says the Lord of hosts." (Malachi 1:11)

His is all glory and He refuses to give even a drop of it up.
"For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act;
For how can My name be profaned?
And My glory I will not give to another." (Isaiah 48:11)

To Him rightly belongs the fear of every man, which will be rendered to Him, although it is presently refused Him. Every man's fear should be and will be directed towards God because of His wrath. His is all the wrath. As much as He has the power to create He also has the power to destroy. He said, referring to the flood, " For after seven more days I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made." (Genesis 7:4)

In Him alone is all salvation, from beginning to end. The very beginning of salvation is His, for He is the one who elects and no one can gain God's favor other than God choosing to bless him with unmerited, unconditional favor before the beginning of the world. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him." (Ephesians 1:3-4)

Only in God can one be forgiven of His wrongdoings. And this only through God's one propitiation for all sins, Jesus Christ. "In Him [Jesus], we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us." (Epesians 1:7)

The end is His. The end where all the world will see that He is the center of everything. Creator, Savior and King. No one has done anything for Him and no one has done anything to earn anything from Him. He is alone in the category of those who are worthy of attention and praise and worship. In the end it will all be "... to the praise of His glory" (Ephesians 1:14b)

Ambling and Rambling... "But a moment and then we pass away"

Life is brief, man is but a moment on this earth and then he flies away. In candid review, no one is to be condemned of this sin of self-delusion more than the very author himself whom society considers a young, bucking collegiate in the spring of life. To him, the flowers bloom, saturating the ether of his existence with their germ and calling to life undiscovered veins of passion. To him, the doors of opportunity fly and remain open flaunting access to treasures of both vice and virtue. In like manner the windows of the establishement of youth beckon his soul to peer through each pane, through which the light of day courses unimpeded, now crashing off the floor then careening wildly across the bare walls and bouncing off the ceiling, painting the cabin with its vivid, ripe palette. His senses, overwhelmed and held captive by the promise of pleasure, commit him to whichever doorway seems fullest, whether judging by the crowd passing through or the music issuing forth or the satiated exasperations of those beyond. In response, his body gives his mind full approval, trusting that his petulant strength and youthful zeal, in the unlikely event that any injury should be incurred, delivers from both snare and pit. Hark! here proceeds the burning star of man, the envy of the world and the acme of humanity to fullness of life and satisfaction of desire and filling and fulfilling of every thing that can be filled or fulfilled. Hark! here goes he as he has always gone in ages past and in ages to come; neither wise nor discerning, but tenacious and bold; with neither prudence nor experience, nor in need of either. Hark! here he goes, see! always laughing or singing or shouting, now writhing his body in a new syncopated rhythm, now performing a pirouette, ever merry and ever joyful in his drunken dance, neither caring nor worrying but knowing that today calls for pleasure and life, work and sobriety remains for tomorrow and that death stung yesterday but now has agreed to do so no more.
